Structure & Formation
Interrogative Pronouns (replace nouns)
¿QUÉ? - What?
The most versatile question word. Use for asking about things, information, or definitions.
¿QUIÉN? / ¿QUIÉNES? - Who?
Ask about people. Use ¿quién? for one person, ¿quiénes? for multiple people.
¿CUÁL? / ¿CUÁLES? - Which? / What?
Use for choosing from options or asking for specific information. Tricky: use ¿cuál? (not ¿qué?) before "es" for personal info!
¿CUÁNTO? / ¿CUÁNTOS? / ¿CUÁNTAS? - How much? / How many?
Agrees in gender and number like an adjective: cuánto (m.sg), cuánta (f.sg), cuántos (m.pl), cuántas (f.pl).
Interrogative Adverbs (ask about circumstances)
¿DÓNDE? - Where?
Ask about location. Also: ¿de dónde? (from where?), ¿a dónde? (to where?).
¿CUÁNDO? - When?
Ask about time. Don't confuse with ¿cuánto? (how much)!
¿CÓMO? - How?
Ask about manner, condition, or method. Very versatile!
¿POR QUÉ? - Why?
Always written as two words with accent when asking "why". Answer with porque (one word, no accent) meaning "because".
Note: ¿Para qué? asks about purpose ("what for?") while ¿Por qué? asks about reason ("why?").
