What You'll Learn
Overview
The imperfect subjunctive (also called past subjunctive) is used to express actions or states that are hypothetical, doubtful, or contrary to reality in the past. It's one of the most important verb forms for intermediate and advanced Spanish learners.
Key Uses of Imperfect Subjunctive
Important: Two Forms Exist!
The imperfect subjunctive has TWO forms that are completely interchangeable:
- -ra form: hablara, comiera, viviera (more common in spoken Spanish, used everywhere)
- -se form: hablase, comiese, viviese (more common in literary and formal writing, especially in Spain)
In this guide, we'll focus on the -ra form as it's more widely used in everyday speech.
Structure & Formation
Formation Steps
- Start with the 3rd person plural (ellos) preterite form (e.g., hablaron, comieron, vivieron)
- Drop the -ron ending (e.g., habla-, comie-, vivie-)
- Add the imperfect subjunctive endings

Common Mistakes
Most Common Imperfect Subjunctive Mistakes
Hypothetical si clauses need imperfect subjunctive, not present subjunctive
Real/possible conditions use indicative, not subjunctive
"Como si" always triggers imperfect subjunctive, never indicative
Nosotros form always needs accent on vowel before -ramos/-semos
Wrong Stem Formation
NEVER form from infinitive: tenera, ponera, hacera
Always use preterite ellos stem:
tuvieron → tuvie-ra, pusieron → pusie-ra, hicieron → hicie-ra
Don't Mix -ra and -se Forms
Wrong (mixed):
hablara, hablases, hablara...
Correct (consistent):
hablara, hablaras, hablara, habláramos...
Both forms are correct, but stick with one throughout a sentence or conjugation
