AQA Foundation writing paper
1 hour 10 minutes, 50 marks: 5 questions. Answer all questions; where there are two, choose one.
Write your answers in Spanish. You must not use a dictionary. Word counts are approximate and everything you write is marked, but a piece well short of the length is unlikely to convey enough.
Timed mode gives you the official 1 hour 10 minutes for the paper. Press start when you're ready.
Question 1
Five sentences about a photo
[10 marks]
You send this photo to a Spanish friend. What is in the photo? Write five sentences in Spanish.
Six people (four women, one of them older with white hair, and two men) stand round a table in a white kitchen, talking and smiling. On the table there is a big bowl of salad, small pizzas on wooden boards and a bowl of bread.
Your answer
The model answer
(present) Hay seis personas en una cocina.
Casi todos (present) sonríen.
Una mujer mayor (present) tiene el pelo blanco.
En la mesa (present) hay una ensalada y unas pizzas.
Una chica (present) lleva gafas.
Why it works
Every sentence has a conjugated verb (hay, sonríen, tiene, lleva), which is what the 2 marks need.
Each one is about something you can see: the people, how they look, what is on the table.
Hay is used twice, which the mark scheme allows, and adjectives agree (una mujer mayor).
Question 2
About 50 words, five bullet points
[10 marks]
Write an email to your Spanish friend about your daily routine. Write approximately 50 words in Spanish. You must write something about each bullet point.
0 words (aim for about 50)
Your answer
The model answer (48 words)
Present
Opinion and reason
Connective
(present) Me levanto a las siete y (present) me visto muy rápido.
Para desayunar (present) como fruta y (present) bebo leche.
(present) Voy al instituto en autobús con mi hermano.
Después de las clases, (opinion and reason) me gusta jugar al fútbol en el parque (connective) porque es divertido.
Normalmente (present) me acuesto a las diez y media.
Why it works
Something on every one of the five bullet points, in order: the top communication mark needs all five.
Variety is what this task rewards: reflexive verbs (me levanto, me visto, me acuesto), times, a means of transport and an opinion with a reason.
The present tense alone is enough for this question.
Question 3
Five grammar gap-fills
[5 marks]
Using your knowledge of grammar, complete each sentence with the correct word from the three options. In the exam you write the word: it must be totally correct, including any accents.
Mi hermana ______ el pelo rubio.
Mi hermana tiene el pelo rubio.
Hair is something you have, so tener: tiene el pelo rubio. Ser and estar don't fit with el pelo. Expressions with tener
El fin de semana pasado ______ a mis abuelos.
El fin de semana pasado visité a mis abuelos.
El fin de semana pasado (last weekend) needs the past: visité is the preterite. The preterite
Mis amigos y yo ______ al tenis los lunes.
Mis amigos y yo jugamos al tenis los lunes.
Mis amigos y yo means "we", so the nosotros form: jugamos (no stem change in the nosotros form). Stem-changing verbs
Me encantan las películas ______.
Me encantan las películas divertidas.
Las películas is feminine plural, so the adjective ends in -as. Adjective agreement
Esta tarde voy a ______ la cena.
Esta tarde voy a preparar la cena.
Ir a is followed by an infinitive: voy a preparar. Ir a + infinitive
Question 4
Translation into Spanish
[10 marks]
Translate the following sentences into Spanish. (40 words)
My town is quite big and modern.
There are lots of shops, but there isn't a cinema.
On Saturdays I go to the swimming pool.
My best friend works in a supermarket.
Last week we ate in a new restaurant.
One model translation
Mi ciudad es bastante grande y moderna.
Hay muchas tiendas, pero no hay cine.
Los sábados voy a la piscina.
Mi mejor amigo trabaja en un supermercado.
La semana pasada comimos en un restaurante nuevo.
Question 5
About 90 words, three bullet points
[15 marks]
Question 5.1
You are writing an article about your school. Write approximately 90 words in Spanish. You must write something about each bullet point.
0 words (aim for about 90)
Your answer
The model answer (84 words)
Past
Present
Future
Opinion and reason
Connective
Complex structure
Why it works
One bullet point per timeframe: present (está, tiene, es), past (fuimos, viajamos, vimos, fue) and future (voy a estudiar, será). The top language mark needs all three.
Each bullet point is developed: what the school is like and why, where the trip was, how they travelled, what was good and bad.
Complex language the mark scheme lists: aunque, lo peor, a relative clause (que era muy cara) and para + infinitive.
Question 5.2
You are writing an article about where you live. Write approximately 90 words in Spanish. You must write something about each bullet point.
0 words (aim for about 90)
Your answer
The model answer (87 words)
Past
Present
Future
Opinion and reason
Connective
Complex structure
(present) Vivo en un barrio tranquilo cerca del centro de Bristol.
(present) Hay un parque, un supermercado y una biblioteca, (connective) pero no (present) hay mucho para los jóvenes.
(opinion and reason) Me gusta mi barrio (connective) porque mis vecinos son amables.
El sábado pasado (past) ayudé a limpiar el parque con un grupo de vecinos.
(past) Recogimos mucha basura y (past) pintamos los bancos.
(opinion and reason) Me (past) sentí muy contento.
En el futuro (future) me gustaría vivir en una ciudad grande como Madrid, (complex structure) donde hay más cosas que hacer.
(complex structure) Si encuentro un buen trabajo, (future) compraré un piso cerca del centro.
Why it works
Present for the area (vivo, hay), past for what happened last Saturday (ayudé, recogimos, pintamos, me sentí) and future for the plans (me gustaría, compraré): all three timeframes.
The third bullet asks where you would like to live, so me gustaría + infinitive answers it directly; a si clause adds a second future idea.
A negative (no hay mucho para los jóvenes), an opinion with a reason and a relative clause with donde give variety.
Models written for this site to show what the mark schemes describe. Examiners mark the whole answer, so no single feature guarantees a mark. Spellings close to correct, wrong gender or agreement, and missing or wrong accents (unless they change the meaning) don't affect communication. Wrong verb forms and wrong pronouns affect communication: "Ayer como un bocadillo", "Te gusta el deporte" for "Me gusta el deporte".
