Spanish reading exam practice

Practice reading papers in each board's format, with the question types the exam uses. Every answer is marked straight away, with the line in the text that gives it.

How the reading paper works

Reading is Paper 3 on both boards and a quarter of the GCSE. Section A is comprehension: every question is in English, and you answer in English or by choosing. Section B is a translation into English. You can't use a dictionary.

AQA (8692)

Paper 3: Reading (25% of the GCSE)

TierTime and marksIn the sample paper
Foundation45 minutes, 50 marks39 comprehension questions (one worth 2) on 9 texts, then five sentences to translate
Higher1 hour, 50 marks39 comprehension questions on 9 texts (the last worth 2), then five sentences to translate

Sections

  • Section A, reading comprehension (40 marks): short and longer texts, questions in English, answered in English or non-verbally (letters in boxes)
  • Foundation: translation into English (10 marks): sentences, at least 35 words of Spanish. Higher: sentences, at least 50 words of Spanish
  • Some items are common to both tiers: in the sample papers, the headlines, health-advice and Chile environment texts appear on both

Question types

  • Match the letter: Who says what (a letter for each person), which headline or subject matches each description
  • Complete the sentence: Three options (A, B, C) to finish an English sentence about the text
  • Past, now or future: Write P, N or F for when each event happens
  • Positive or negative: Higher: write P, N or P + N for each person's opinion
  • Answer in English: Short answers, usually one detail per mark
  • Work out a word: "Read the last sentence again. What is ...?": a single word from outside the vocabulary list, with three options

Texts and unfamiliar words

  • Public notices, adverts, brochure extracts, newspapers, magazines, emails and websites, in formal and informal styles, set in Spanish-speaking countries and communities
  • Some questions ask you to infer the meaning of a single word from outside the vocabulary list, from the sentence around it
  • Higher and overlapping texts may include a few other words from outside the list, glossed in English next to the text (no more than 2% of a text)
  • Up to 2% of a text can be cognates from outside the list (words spelt nearly the same as in English, with the same meaning)
  • Names of places that are not on the list and not easy to understand can be explained in a note

How answers are marked

  • A mark is given when you have satisfactorily communicated your understanding: your English doesn't have to be perfect
  • Words in brackets in the mark scheme aren't needed for the mark; underlined words must be there (for example "driving" alone doesn't score where the text says more people drive)
  • The mark scheme lists answers it rejects, such as "there are many factories" when the text says many factories have been built
  • In translation, an answer in the wrong tense is rejected
  • No dictionaries at any time

Pearson Edexcel (1SP1)

Paper 3: Reading and understanding in Spanish (25% of the GCSE)

TierTime and marksIn the sample paper
Foundation45 minutes, 50 marksNine questions in Section A (the sample paper has 9 texts, with 3 to 7 marks each)
Higher1 hour, 50 marksEight questions in Section A (the sample paper has 8 texts, with 3 to 7 marks each)

Sections

  • Section A, reading comprehension (40 marks): multiple-choice, multiple-response and short open-response questions, all set in English and answered in English
  • Foundation: translation into English (10 marks): five sentences. The paper advises about 10 minutes. Higher: one passage. The paper advises about 10 minutes
  • Three questions are common to both tiers

Question types

  • Who says what: A grid: put a cross under the person for each statement
  • Multiple response: "Put a cross in each one of the three correct boxes": choose the true statements from six
  • Complete the sentence: Three options (A, B, C) for each sentence
  • Gap fill from a box: Complete English sentences with words from a box; there are more words than gaps
  • Short answers in English: Tables or questions, often "1 detail"; you do not need to write in full sentences
  • Best translation of a word: "Which of these is the best translation for the word ...?": two words per tier from outside the vocabulary list, 1 mark each

Texts and unfamiliar words

  • Blogs, internet forums, adverts, tourist brochures, newspaper and magazine articles, emails, diary extracts and school projects, short and longer, set at home or more often in a Spanish-speaking country
  • Two single words per tier come from outside the vocabulary list, and you infer their meaning (1 mark each)
  • Names of towns, cities and countries that are not on the list are glossed, and pictures explain unfamiliar cultural features
  • People in the texts only have names from the specification's list (Appendix 3), so you can tell a name from a word you need to know

How answers are marked

  • Mark schemes are applied positively: you are rewarded for what you show you can do
  • Where a question asks for "1 detail", any one of the listed details scores ("EITHER ... OR")
  • The mark scheme lists answers it rejects, such as "it has many students" for a detail about the school building, or the isolated word "vegetables" where the reason is a variety of vegetables
  • Crossed-out work is marked unless you have replaced it with another answer
  • No dictionaries

Neither board sets literary texts or questions in Spanish on this specification's reading paper. Section B is practised on the translation page.

Practice papers

Choose your board and tier. Each paper is a Section A in the board's format, with about 25 to 30 marks of questions (a real Section A has 40). Answer everything, then check: you see your mark for each question and the paper, and the line in the text that gives each answer. Short answers in English are marked for meaning, so spelling slips don't cost the mark.

Mobile phones at school

You read this article from a Spanish newspaper about mobile phones in schools.

Answer the following questions in English.

Read the first paragraph again. What is a taquilla? Write the correct letter in the box.

19 A taquilla is … [1 mark]

My town's festival

You read a blog by Pilar about the festival in her town in Galicia, in the north-west of Spain.

When do these events happen according to the blog? Write the correct letter in each box.

Necesitas: hablar inglés y ser una persona simpática y paciente.

Answer the following questions in English.

Section B: translation into English (10 marks)

Sentences, at least 35 words of Spanish. Practise it at the exam length, marked part by part, on the translation page.

Practise the translation →

Practice papers written for this site in each board's format, on the themes of both specifications, using the GCSE vocabulary lists; words outside the lists are glossed or are the "work out a word" questions, as in the real papers. Like the real papers, a few texts appear on both the Foundation and the Higher paper. The checker for English answers accepts the key ideas each answer needs and common wordings: if you think a right answer has been missed, read the "why" and judge for yourself.

Traps to look out for

The wrong options in reading questions are usually words from the text used in the wrong way. These are the ones the papers use most.

Negatives

No, nunca, nada, nadie and ningún turn a sentence round. The word in the options may be in the text, with no in front of it.

No es una fiesta triste. It isn't a sad festival.

Time markers

Antes, de pequeño, hace dos años and el año pasado point to the past; ahora, actualmente and hoy en día to now; el año que viene, mañana and cuando + subjunctive to the future. Check the verb ending too.

Antes comía comida rápida, pero ahora como fruta.I used to eat fast food, but now I eat fruit.

Pero, sin embargo, aunque

These often bring in the other side of an opinion, which is what "positive and negative" questions test.

Me encantan las excursiones, pero pueden ser muy cansadas.I love trips, but they can be very tiring.

The right person

In "who says what" questions, the same topic often comes up for two people. Find who actually says it, and how.

Vivo con mi padre (Martín) / Me llevo muy bien con mi madre (Inés).Living with a parent is not the same as getting on well with one.

Just the detail asked

Answer the question that is asked, with the detail the text gives. The boards' sample mark schemes reject vague answers (AQA rejects "driving" on its own where the text says more people drive) and wrong details. Our checker withholds the mark when your answer also contradicts the text, so don't add guesses.

el número de personas que conducen ha aumentadothe number of people who drive has increased

Words you don't know

Use the sentence around the word, look for a cognate (an English word inside it), and read the glosses marked *. The "work out a word" questions are built so the context gives it away.

Mi abuelo es muy mayor y camina con un bastón.My grandad is very old and walks with a bastón: a walking stick.
