Advice and obligation: what you know and what's new
You already know tener que + infinitive from A1: "Tengo que trabajar" (I have to work). This week you add more ways to say what someone must or should do. They are all followed by an infinitive, and they differ in two ways:
- How strong they are: from a real need (tienes que) to friendly advice (deberías) and gentle suggestions (es mejor). - Who they are for: one person (tienes que, debes, deberías) or everyone (hay que, es importante).

Examples
Tienes que ir al médico. You have to go to the doctor.
Debes tomar la medicina. You must take the medicine.
Deberías descansar más.You should rest more.
Hay que dormir bien. You need to sleep well. (everyone does)
Grammar point 2 of 6
Deber + infinitive
Deber is a regular -ER verb. It goes straight before the infinitive, with nothing in between: "Debes descansar" (not "debes de descansar" or "debes que descansar"). It means "must" or "ought to" and expresses a duty, so it is what doctors, parents and rules use.
deber (must / ought to) - Present Tense
The highlighted part is the ending.
Person
Singular
Plural
1st person
(yo) debo
(nosotros/as) debemos
2nd person
(tú) debes
(vosotros/as) debéis
3rd person
(él/ella/usted) debe
(ellos/ellas/ustedes) deben
Examples
Debes beber más agua. You must drink more water.
Los niños deben dormir diez horas.Children ought to sleep ten hours.
Debemos cuidar nuestra salud. We must look after our health.
No debes conducir si has bebido. You mustn't drive if you've been drinking.
Tip
Said to a friend, "debes" can sound like a parent telling you off. For friendly advice, Spanish speakers use deberías (the next point).
Grammar point 3 of 6
Deberías: the friendly "you should"
Deberías + infinitive is the most common way to give a friend advice: "Deberías dormir más" (You should sleep more). Learn it as a phrase for now. It is a form of deber called the conditional, which you will meet properly in Week 7.
For "you shouldn't", put no in front: "No deberías trabajar tanto". To ask for advice, say ¿Qué debería hacer? (What should I do?).
Examples
Deberías dormir más.You should sleep more.
Deberías ir al médico. You should go to the doctor.
No deberías trabajar tanto. You shouldn't work so much.
Me duele la espalda. ¿Qué debería hacer? My back hurts. What should I do?
Tip
Compare "Debes estudiar más" (You must study more: a teacher or a parent) with "Deberías estudiar más" (You should study more: a friend). Both are correct; deberías is softer.
Grammar point 4 of 6
Hay que + infinitive: rules for everyone
Hay que + infinitive says what is necessary in general, for everyone, without naming anyone. It never changes form: there is no subject. English usually says "you have to" or "you need to" here, meaning people in general.
Compare: "Tienes que hacer ejercicio" (you, personally) and "Hay que hacer ejercicio" (everyone should).
Negatives: watch out
Spanish
English
No tienes que ir.
You don't have to go.
No hace falta llamar.
There's no need to call.
No debes fumar.
You mustn't smoke.
No deberías fumar.
You shouldn't smoke.
Examples
Hay que comer cinco piezas de fruta al día.You need to eat five pieces of fruit a day.
Hay que estirar antes de correr. You have to stretch before running.
En la piscina hay que ducharse antes de nadar. At the swimming pool you have to shower before swimming.
Para aprender un idioma, hay que practicar. To learn a language, you have to practise.
Tip
This is a classic trap. "No tienes que" and "no hace falta" mean there is no need: "No hace falta pagar, es gratis" (You don't have to pay, it's free). To forbid something, use "no debes": "No debes fumar aquí" (You mustn't smoke here). "No hay que" can mean either, depending on the context ("No hay que tirar papeles al suelo" = You mustn't drop litter), so for "no need" use no hace falta.
Grammar point 5 of 6
Es importante, es mejor and te recomiendo
These are softer ways to give advice. Es importante, es mejor and es bueno + infinitive sound like general health tips (es necesario is stronger, like hay que), as in a magazine or from a doctor. To make it personal and polite, say te recomiendo or te aconsejo + infinitive (I recommend you / I advise you to...).
Softer advice
Spanish
English
es importante + inf.
it's important to
es mejor + inf.
it's better to
es bueno + inf.
it's good to
te recomiendo + inf.
I recommendyou
te aconsejo + inf.
I advise you to
Examples
Es importante hacer ejercicio. It's important to exercise.
Es mejor cenar pronto. It's better to have dinner early.
No es bueno comer mucha sal.It isn't good to eat a lot of salt.
Te recomiendo caminar media hora al día.I recommend walking for half an hour a day.
Te aconsejo dormir la siesta.I advise you to have a nap.
Tip
Recomendar changes its stem like empezar: recomiendo, recomiendas, recomienda. Aconsejar is regular: aconsejo, aconsejas, aconseja.
Grammar point 6 of 6
Changing habits: dejar de, empezar a, intentar, evitar
Health advice is usually about stopping or starting something. Dejar de + infinitive means "to stop doing", and empezar a + infinitive means "to start doing". Don't forget the little words: dejar de, empezar a. Intentar (to try to) and evitar (to avoid) take the infinitive directly.
Verbs for changing habits
Spanish
English
Example
dejar de + inf.
to stopdoing
Tengo que dejar de tomar tanto café.
empezar a + inf.
to startdoing
Voy a empezar a correr.
intentar + inf.
to try to
Intento comer más verdura.
evitar
to avoid
Hay que evitar el estrés.
reducir
to cut down on
Debes reducir el azúcar.
cuidarse
to look after yourself
Es importante cuidarse.
Examples
Deberías dejar de fumar. You should stop smoking.
He empezado a ir al gimnasio.I've started going to the gym.
Intento dormir ocho horas.I try to sleep eight hours.
Es mejor evitar la comida rápida. It's better to avoid fast food.
Tip
Empezar is stem-changing: empiezo, empiezas, empieza. Dejar de is regular: dejo de fumar, dejas de fumar.
