Grammar focus

Essential grammar for this lesson with examples.

Grammar point 1 of 6

Introduction: the present perfect

The present perfect (pretérito perfecto) is the Spanish "I have done" tense. This week you will use it for life experiences: things you have or haven't done at some point in your life, without saying when.

The formula is haber (conjugated) + past participle. Only haber changes for each person; the past participle stays the same.

haber (to have, as in "I have done") - Present Tense
PersonSingularPlural
1st person(yo) he(nosotros/as) hemos
2nd person(tú) has(vosotros/as) habéis
3rd person(él/ella/usted) ha(ellos/ellas/ustedes) han

Examples

He viajado a muchos países.I have travelled to many countries.
¿Has probado la comida japonesa?Have you tried Japanese food?
Mi hermana ha visitado Roma tres veces. My sister has visited Rome three times.
Nunca hemos visto esa película. We have never seen that film.
Tip

Nothing goes between haber and the participle. Negatives and object pronouns go before haber: "No he comido", "Lo he visto" (never "He no comido" or "He lo visto").

Grammar point 2 of 6

Regular past participles

For -AR verbs, take off -ar and add -ado. For -ER and -IR verbs, take off -er or -ir and add -ido. With haber, the participle never changes for gender or number: "Ana ha comido", "Ellos han comido".

Regular past participles

The highlighted part is the ending.

InfinitivePast ParticipleEnglish
hablarhabladospoken
viajarviajadotravelled
comercomidoeaten
aprenderaprendidolearnt
vivirvividolived
dormirdormidoslept

Examples

hablar → habladoto speak → spoken
comer → comidoto eat → eaten
vivir → vividoto live → lived
Hemos comido en ese restaurante muchas veces. We have eaten at that restaurant many times.
Tip

Two things to watch. Regular participles never change their stem: the gerund is durmiendo, but the participle is dormido. And when the stem ends in a, e or o, -ido takes an accent: leer → leído, oír → oído, traer → traído, creer → creído.

Grammar point 3 of 6

Irregular past participles

Some very common verbs have irregular past participles that you need to learn. There aren't many, and you will hear them all the time, so they stick quickly. Most end in -to (escrito, visto, puesto) or -cho (hecho, dicho).

Irregular past participles
InfinitivePast ParticipleEnglish
hacerhechodone / made
decirdichosaid / told
escribirescritowritten
vervistoseen
ponerpuestoput
romperrotobroken
abrirabiertoopened
volvervueltocome back / returned
morirmuertodied
descubrirdescubiertodiscovered

Examples

¿Has hecho los deberes?Have you done your homework?
No he dicho nada.I haven't said anything.
¿Habéis visto la nueva película?Have you (all) seen the new film?
He escrito tres correos hoy.I have written three emails today.
Grammar point 4 of 6

Alguna vez, nunca, ya and todavía no

These words go with the present perfect to talk about experiences: alguna vez (ever, in questions), nunca (never), ya (already) and todavía no (not yet). To say how many times, use una vez (once), dos veces (twice) or muchas veces (many times).

Because nothing can go between haber and the participle, these words go before haber or after the participle, never in the middle. In questions, ya means "yet": ¿Ya has comido? = Have you eaten yet?

Where the word goes
WordWhere it goesExample
alguna vezAt the start, or after the participle¿Has comido alguna vez paella?
nuncaBefore haber, or after the participle with noNunca he esquiado. / No he esquiado nunca.
yaBefore haber, or at the endYa hemos comido. / Hemos comido ya.
todavía noBefore haber, or no... todavía at the endTodavía no he cenado. / No he cenado todavía.
una vez, dos vecesUsually at the endHe estado en México dos veces.

Examples

¿Alguna vez has viajado a Sudamérica?Have you ever travelled to South America?
Nunca he montado a caballo.I have never ridden a horse.
Ya he terminado el informe.I have already finished the report.
Todavía no he visitado Barcelona.I haven't visited Barcelona yet.
He estado en México dos veces.I have been to Mexico twice.
Tip

When nunca comes first, it replaces no: "Nunca he ido" (not "No nunca he ido"). When it comes after the verb, you need no as well: "No he ido nunca". Both mean "I have never been".

Grammar point 5 of 6

Talking about experiences

To ask about an experience, use ¿Has... alguna vez? or ¿Alguna vez has...? To ask "Have you ever been to...?", Spanish usually says ¿Has estado alguna vez en...? (from estar). Answer with Sí, he... or No, nunca he..., then add a detail.

Examples

¿Has estado alguna vez en México? Sí, he estado dos veces.Have you ever been to Mexico? Yes, I've been twice.
¿Alguna vez has buceado? Sí, he buceado en el Caribe.Have you ever been diving? Yes, I've been diving in the Caribbean.
¿Has subido alguna vez a una montaña? No, nunca he subido a una montaña.Have you ever climbed a mountain? No, I've never climbed a mountain.
¿Ya has probado el gazpacho? Todavía no, pero quiero probarlo.Have you tried gazpacho yet? Not yet, but I want to try it.
Tip

To keep the conversation going, ask "¿Y te gustó?" (And did you like it?) or "¿Cuándo fue?" (When was it?). These use the preterite, because now you are asking about one particular time. Next week is all about when to use each tense.

Grammar point 6 of 6

Common experience verbs

These are the most useful verbs for "Have you ever...?" conversations. All of them have regular participles.

Experience verbs

The highlighted part is the ending.

InfinitivePast ParticipleEnglish
probarprobadotried / tasted
conocerconocidomet / got to know
visitarvisitadovisited
ganarganadowon
perderperdidolost
montarmontadoridden
bucearbuceadobeen diving
subirsubidoclimbed / gone up

Examples

He probado la comida tailandesa.I have tried Thai food.
Hemos conocido a gente muy simpática. We have met some very nice people.
¿Has ganado alguna vez un premio?Have you ever won a prize?
He perdido el pasaporte dos veces.I have lost my passport twice.
Tip

Conocer + a person in the present perfect means "to have met": "He conocido a tu hermano" (I've met your brother). With a place, Spanish often uses the present tense of conocer to mean "I have been there": "Todavía no conozco Sevilla" (I haven't been to Seville yet).
